It was not to easy to find a campground for us in Custer, SD this last week. Oh yes there are a lot of campgrounds in the Black Hills indeed but the season does not start until May 15, or in some cases Memorial Day which is May 29! Actually if you want to have amenities as in pool etc then it is from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
As we don’t plan much ahead, ever, we found that many were still closed and lots of the parks here are older so those few open had a hard time fitting anything over 40’.
We looked and made inquiries about 2 days before our arrival and one park responded to my request for a one week stay. Custer Crazy Horse Campground for the win! This said we found out that our Lucy Lou would not fit in the big rig section down the hill for two reasons. The drive to get to it, turn and narrow roads with sharp turns, stop offs and retaining wall. However this did not stop us at all. Thanks to the incredible considerate owners of the camp with were able to unhook Lou and store her on the top of the property so Ron only had to focus on getting Lucy down hill.
All this was absolutely worth it! It was a peaceful and relaxing stay among trees and nature. I was able to ride my bike for miles. We were just 0.8 miles from the town of Custer and 2 miles from Custer State Park. Heaven.
We had two neighbors for the first three nights but then they each left and it was just us alone for the following 5 nights. They converted one of the many cabins there into a coffee house and I treated myself to one while playing (well sitting on the swing) of the 80’s playground they had. I loved all of it.
