Virginia Beach - First Landing State Park - Parking Adventures!
There is so much to love about this place but we didn’t actually pick it for the scenery, history and location (on the beach!).
No, we chose to come here so Ron could catch up with a friend from his time flying for a commuters, first at Gem State out of Idaho and then Golden Gate out of California. I have to say meeting up with them was absolutely wonderful and so much fun!
Well first however was our arrival at the First Landing State Park. I had booked us a 50 foot site, after calling them and them confirming that we could park the trailer in a separate location. When we arrived we were told there should be enough room for both and no storage was available. Now the park is right on the beach but it has many, many trees. We were in spot 16 and you approach in a one way loop. Only problem is we couldn’t do the turn backing in from that angle. So with guidance of about 4 fellow campers we tried (well Ron did) to back her in inch by inch for about 30 min. Of course that also meant we blocked the road during our efforts. Finally a Park Ranger showed up and after assessing he said he will block the road and we need to approach from the other side. We had thought the same and were grateful. Ron pulled out and did a turnaround in the parking lot so he could enter the loop going against traffic. Then the second fun part happened by now having a better back-in angle but still us trying to fit 65 feet into a 50 foot wooded lot. Two big trees formed a passage way at the end where Ron had to threat the needle inch by inch with just 2 to 3 inches of space on each side. Plus we had to watch the sides as well for boulders and posts separating the sites. Ron was almost lined up when the Park Ranger (who was busy dragging a picnic table out if the way and clearing the space behind Lucy Lou) came up to me and said he got the clear that we can park Lou in the parking lot). After being out here trying to park what seemed like hours by now I just stared at him for a few seconds and then told him I will not tell my husband this now over the Walkie-Talkie as I am sure he knows that by now there is pride involved in my husband getting Lucy to fit! The Ranger smiled at me and said ‘absolutely - let’s get her in this spot’. About 5 min later Lucy Lou was parked, snug as a bug but she was settled in.
Trust me we all deserved a cold beer after that!
