Oh how I love love love this area. Harpers Ferry is choke full with history and it is hard to wrap it all in. We stayed for 3 nights and I admit 7 nights or more would have been needed to get it all in. But I did my best.
A big plus was the location of the KOA! I was able to ride my bike into Harpers Ferry (thanks to it being a e-bike as the hills would have been beyond challenging).
Ironically, when I rode my bike into town the first time I asked where I would find the ruin, meaning the old church. The young couple I asked had just stepped out of their house with a baby stroller so I guessed they would know in which direction I should head. Well, their responds came with a laugh stating ‘there are ruins everywhere’.
I saw the old cathedral, Jefferson’s Rock, John’s Brown’s Fort and the Arsenal Ruin. I saw the Appalachian Trail Visitor Centers, Lewis and Clark’s mark in Harpers Ferry as in getting supplies here. The historical presence of Lieutenant Colonel Robert E. Lee, as well as George Washington.
One could throw a dart on the historic timeline of Harpers Ferry and discover a treasure of stories at each segment.
Each person mentioned here had incredible impacts on this country.
I loved the feel of the area. The hills and deep valley of the rivers converging. The narrow steep streets, the many historical monuments in town to the surrounding hills that mark battles that were fought here.
I highly recommend visiting here if in the area. I know I wouldn’t mind coming back.
