I love history and while I am fairly confident in European history I am still missing some parts of this countries high lights.
Here I learned that Fort Niagara is a major historic site - the longest continuously occupied military site in the country!
It began as a French military post in the late 1600’s, and included the famous ‘French Castle,” the oldest building on the Great Lakes, build in 1726.
The fort was captured by the British in 1759, and became a U.S. Army Post in 1796. Old Fort Niagara served as an active post until 1916. The area outside the historic fort, the “new’” Fort Niagara served as an Army Post until the 1960’s, when it became Fort Niagara State Park. A U.S. Coast Guard Station was established there in 1893, and this station remains in service today.
Walking the grounds and seeing re-enacting of events happen on the grounds was beautiful. Even a little canon was fired. They have actors inside the building playing different parts. Nice trails and we even had a view across Lake Ontario to Toronto, Canada.
