So a few days ago I surprised my husband by booking a Buggy Tour to a Mennonite Dairy Farm Tour.
It was a fun and educational experience. As I learned back in Kalona IA, there is a difference between Amish and Mennonites, as well as different levels of conservative to liberal. Almost 40 different groupings.
The one who gave us our tour was quite a bit more liberal. For one we were told that photos were allowed to be taken but no video. They also allow their members to ride e-bikes. The Dairy Farm is hooked up to electric due to needing to follow the safety regulation in regards to storing their milk. They had 59 cows and several horses that work the fields or drive the buggies.
Every couple of days the milk gets picked up and is transferred to a plant up in Michigan, actually just right across the border.
I got to feed a horse, give the bottle to a calf and then attempt to milk ‘Daisy’ a very patient cow. However, my absolute highlight was that I got to drink raw milk. I was raised on it and to me it’s wonderful.
Also I am aware of the controversy the Amish face in some of the choices they make and I am sure nothing is ever black or white. I just have to admit our meetups were all lovely on our trip and we met some wonderful people here in IN and back in IA.
