Maine ❤️ St. Croix Island Historical Site, Calais

Maine ❤️ St. Croix Island Historical Site, Calais

Soaking up history is by far one of my favorite things to do and St. Croix International Historic Site, which is just 1 mile from the campground, did not disappoint.

Here is where the fist attempt by the French was made to colonize North America, and it is the location of one of the earliest European Settlements in North America.

The expedition led by Pierre Dugua arrived at the island in 1604. Seventy-nine members of the expedition, including Samuel Champlain, passed the severe winter of 1604-1605 on the island. Thirty-five settlers died, apparently of Scurvy, and were buried in a small cemetery on the island.

In the spring of 1605 the Passamaquoddy, befriended by the French, returned from their winter sojourn to the shores of St. Croix Island. They traded game for bread and the health of the settlers improved. Pierre Dugua made the decision to move the colony and founded the settlement of Port Royal, in today's Nova Scotia.

This gem of history is free of charge to visit and the sculptures and interpretive sign are a true gift. One can't go to the island but view it from the shores of both the USA and Canadian side.
