AOK Camper Park, Passport America, 901 SH-228 Spur, Amarillo TX 79111
March 4, 2022
We stopped at this self serve Campground for the night on our way to San Antonio. It was a decent campground, nothing fancy but pull thru that fit our 65 feet with full hookups. Since we have a Passport America Membership it only cost us $15 for the night. There was no camp host interactions. You drove in, picked your spot and left the money in the morning in an envelope drop box. We would use this place again if we wanted a safe spot for a night.
JBSA Lackland FamCamp, San Antonio, TX (enter at Growden Gate)
March 7, 2022 to April 7, 2022
This campground is on the Joint Base San Antonio and was pretty nice. It had decent space in the pull thru and we could have fit just do with the trailer. However for $150 a month we stored it in the adjacent storage lot. We had access to this campground thanks to Niki who sponsored us and got us visitor passes to get in and off the military base. We met some nice people there and it was clean and quiet. The base had access to different fast food options, plenty of trails to walk the pups plus clean washrooms and laundromat. We stayed for 1 month which cost us $550, or if you stay for just a night the cost would be $25 a night.
Magnolia Beach, Port Lavaca, TX (Boondocking)
April 7, 2022 to April 9, 2022
We loved this place as you get to park right on the beach. It is FCFS (first come first serve) and no hookups. The beach consists of crushed seashells so it’s solid to drive on. Also it is a unique area as it is a bay and facing East so the tide never is deeper then a foot. We learned that it is best to arrive on a Monday or Tuesday if one wants some more quiet time as the weekend gets crowded with locals who do like to party. I had to suffer thru some horrid country music for a day. One can only take so much achy breaky heart music 😂 We did meet fun people there, and I was invited to join the senior Texas Camping Group on FB. Admission is 55 years old but I was honorary accepted as I am indeed always an older soul compared to my age plus I am not that far off. We also met an only French speaking group from Quebec Canada and it was fun trying to communicate with them. Then of course what boondocking means is it is free $0.
We returned to Magnolia Beach on
July 15, 2022 to July 19, 2022
Our second stay was beyond beautiful. I rode my bike a lot and explored Indianola, plus we spend one night at a private little beach down towards Indianola.
KOA Colorado (Fountain CO)
April 11, 2022 to April 12, 2022
We chose this campground due to its location which was very close to the Transwest Repair place which we needed to get our water tank sensors replaced. Rating that Renegade Service Company will have to take place in another blog post. As to the KOA it was nice as it had some amenities as in a pool, hot tub, dog runs and trails by the ‘river’. Those trails however were also an attraction to some homeless camps and there was quiet a bit litter there. The campsite was a pull thru but had a strange set up as all the hookups were at the end. If one had no trailer it be okay but we had a trailer so to fit in it meant no sewer hookup. Now we could have unhooked and parked the trailer in front of us, however we only planned to spend one night so it seemed to much hassle. Instead, in the morning before checkout, we backed up and dumped our tanks then. It was also on the pricy side as in $76 a night. Not sure it was worth it.
Return trip here:
September 26, 2022 to October 1, 2022
We got a nicer spot this time around and we’re able to stay hooked up plus hook up. The pool is nice, spa is out of service. We rode the bikes and it is nice to walk the pups here plus the dog run is nice. So this time around is nicer then our first stay but it’s also more pricey as in $90.72 a night.
Peak RV Resort, Colorado Springs by the Airport.
April 15, 2022 to April 30, 2022
Now this place was interesting as it was a fenced in, gated large parking lot. Why it was called a Resort we were not sure. It was a paved large area with several rows of pull thru’s and plenty of backing in on the perimeter. There were small green spots on each corner and two tiny dog runs. There was no bathrooms or showers unless one considers a portable acceptable. The pluses were it had dog poopy bag dispensers and trash cans all over the campground. Another highlight was the people working there were very nice (especially the front office employees, Terry stands out). On Fridays you got a free donut at the office which ended up being a social hour of chit chat. It was however pretty pricy and we don’t think it was worth it. $365 a week and we ended up spending two weeks there waiting on the adjusters to get the damages in with the insurance.
El Rancho Brewery, Evergreen CO - HARVEST HOST
May 2, 2022 to May 2, 2022
Our first try with a harvest host did not go as planned. For one I never got a responds back on my reservation request and when we pulled up we were told we can spend the night but the brewery was closed due to short staffing. The parking said 45+ for size and we found out we did not fit. So it took a lot of maneuvering and the approval from the manager that we could park parallel to the road since no customers would show up to use the parking spaces.
Boulder Fairgrounds, Longmont, CO
May 3, 2022 to May 12, 2022
This campground was a little treasure find. It is located right in the fairground, it offered water and electricity but a separate dump station. The spots were tight and narrow but for $25 a night it was fine with us. You can stay 14 days per calendar year and if you need to use the dump station it had a $10 fee. The restrooms and showers were clean and nice. Lots of hot water and good pressure in the showers. What truly made this campground a good fit for us was I had plenty of area to walk the pups. It bordered a nature preserve with several ponds and a high Canadian goose population. Also the fairground offered plenty of walking as well and there was constant entertainment offered at the fairgrounds. Barrel Racing, Pottery Sale, Farmers Market, Flea Market etc etc…
Sacred White Mountain (Blanca Peak), near the Great Sandunes, CO (Boondocking)
May 13, 2022 to May 16, 2022
37.526805, -105.593479. The getting there was a tad tough as we had to climb over one or two passes. One of them peaked at 9200 feet. Lucy had to struggle a bit plus we missed the truckstop on the I25 turnoff so she did all this with not a full tank of gas. However the spot we aimed fir that i found on the Big Rig Friendly (BRF) FB Page had the coordinates to a spot that was taken when we got there. Our mistake was arriving in a Friday afternoon. We did find a fairly level spot farther down and the setting itself was beautiful, quiet and peaceful. Also very very Sandy as well as dusty when cars drove by. The mountain was beautiful as were the incredible sunsets. Keetna loved hiking through the desert, Oliver not so much. To many prickly things for him on the ground and yes we saw plenty of cactuses around. One wonderful experience was how well we both slept there as it was truly amazingly quiet at night and complete darkness. It was a restful stay. Shall we return to this spot again we will aim for Mondays as just like Magnolia Beach we are not to much into weekend warriors crossing our paths 😉
Mountaindale Cabin & RV Resorts, 2000 Barrett Rd, Colorado Springs
May 16, 2022 to May 20, 2022
$61.90 a night
The most beautiful landscaped campground we stayed at yet. Wonderful large pull thru site for us with a picnic table and plenty of room (site 76). The people working there were absolutely delightful and we even used the hot tub one night. Plenty of space for me to walk the pups, plus a good sized dog run that both K & O loved. We spend 4 nights there at $61.90 the night.
We returned to this campground on
August 14, 2022 to August 16, 2022 and in
September 19, 2022 to September 23, 2022
Spot 46 was our favorite so far. We like this campground a lot.
Golden Eagle Campground, 710 Rock Creek Canyon Rd, Colorado Springs
May 20, 2022 to May 26, 2022
$73 a day
This campground has a bit of a tricky entry as a big rig will need to make a very tight turn up a steep narrow road in order to enter the actual campground which sits on a plateau. We saw lots of deep cuts in the Concrete leading up the campground. Not much landscaping here as it is an older campground, however our spot 491 is a deluxe Full Hookup which means we got a very large spot that has our site for parking and another site for our front yard and picnic table. The sites however are not very level so it took us a few tries. The campground is owned by the May Family that also own the May Natural History Museum that is located at the entrance. There are several hiking trails, a fishing pond that is stocked with trout and a beautiful pet walk through an older abandoned campground in the trees (bushes). Like a ghost campground. While we were here it snowed heavily and that meant lots of mud when melting began. There is no pavement here as well as no wifi. We got along well with cell phone reception however.
We returned to this campground on August 23, 2022 until August 30, 2022. High mosquito season and it was hot temps. Site 473
Boulder Fairgrounds, Longmont, CO
May 26, 2022 to May 31, 2022
As with our stay last time this campground was wonderful as in great location, full hookup and great price as in $25 a night. This time we saw a miniature horse show, barrel racing as well as the farmers market again.
KOA Denver West, Central City CO
May 31, 2022 to June 3, 2022
This was a campground up in the mountains. We had to climb up I-70 as well as the climb up to Central City, CO. The campground is at an elevation of 8888 feet. It is a KOA so it was on the pricy site as in $85 a night for 3 Adults and 2 dogs. It had a nice layout with a nice fireplace and tables, they offered breakfast as well as pizza and wings for dinner. There was laundry, clean bathrooms and showers, plus’s two hot tubs. Sadly we had no time to make use of them as we were busy in Denver during our stay there. There was a dog run and nice walking paths for the dogs.
Santa Fe Skies RV Park, Santa Fe NM
June 4, 2022 to June 5, 2022
I loved, loved this campground! Beautiful layout, large pull thru’s and spaces. There was art and sculptures throughout the campground plus nice trails and a large dog run. Friendly people and family run since 1935. We definitely want to come back to this campground.
Hatch RV Park, Hatch NM
June 5, 2022 to June 6, 2022
Nothing fancy but clean and quiet self checkin after one calls the number provided on the board by the entrance. It was $48 a night, full hookup. We spend one night here on our way to TX and it was a good spot right off I-25.
Van Horn RV Park, Van Horn TX
June 6, 2022 to June 7, 2022
This campground is a former KOA but now Good Sams RV Park. A large and easy accessible campground. Big pull thru, full hookups, no shade but has a dog park, a pond, a horse coral, chickens as well as a pool (during off season May to September). The cafe is closed during off season but that was no issue for us. We loved the pool and relaxed there in the afternoon. And the price with the good Sam membership is $36 a night.
Stadium RV Park, Sonora TX
June 7, 2022 to June 8, 2022
Another very no fuss but perfect stop on our way. Nice pull thru, full hookups that even include the water and sewer hoses. When arriving you call the number on the sign. Mike comes and guides you in. He is very friendly and even offered us rides into town if we needed anything. To get to the campground one has to drive through a neighborhood which we actually enjoyed. We saw kids playing basketball in the side streets. No shade but for $25, cash only, it is perfect for our night stay.
Bending Oaks RV Park, Fredericksburg TX
June 8, 2022 to June 10, 2022
We loved this RV Park. Nice layout, trees, a pool, dog run and lots of ‘wildlife’. They have chickens, lots of stray cats that they catch and release after getting them neutered or spayed. Longhorns, goats, horses, deer…..
The people who own this campground are super nice and this area of Texas (hill country) is really beautiful. A lot of German settlers arrived here and created a beautiful German influenced town. It is about 3 miles outside of the town of Fredericksburg so one needs a car. However right next to the campground is a Farmers market store that makes some very yummy panini sandwiches. There is also a gas stand there to it. So this campground was a win and we can see ourself returning to it.
