Ah how I love driving our Rosalina (car) and those who know me know I love how spunky and fast she is. She takes on any climb and elevation without a shrug…..
Now on to Lucy, our sweet hard working Super C. The one thing she has in common with Rosalina is of course they both are Diesel engines, powerful and strong.
Now our A7 weighs in at around 4200 lbs. Lucy at about 34,200 lbs. Lucy however is loaded and pulls a 3200 lbs heavy enclosed trailer that has Lucy and some stuff in it. So Lucy is pulling about 42,000 to 43,000 lbs. That is impressive and hard work!
Today we again climbed through the mountains, the Sangre de Cristo Mountain Range at a high point pass of 9800 feet. Now the problem was, caused by ourself, is that she was doing that on our first trip down on a pretty empty tank as we passed the last trucks stop not realizing we would be climbing a lot. So when we left the campground we knew we had to ‘baby’ her until we found a gas station that we could fit in. We hit the jackpot at an Alta Gas Station in Fort Garland. Thank goodness for high clearance!
So back to driving. I knew we were pushing it with her being so empty that Ron and I agreed for me to not go over 50 mph to 55 mph. Now some of the stretches we were on had a speed limit of either 65 mph or at times 75 mph. This mend that I started collecting cars and even other RVers behind me. Now I admit I did not feel to guilty about having cars behind me because I know they can accelerate and pass if wanted. There were plenty of options on the road we were on. I did think at times that they must be thinking I should pull over and let them pass…. Here is why this won’t happen when I am driving on an incline: How much diesel does one think Lucy will suck up going to a stop and then starting to pull all that weight to get going again? Well to much for my comfort.
So my advice is if you are stuck behind an RV or Semi Truck, climbing a pass, do NOT expect them to pull over to let your 4000 lbs car pass you. All you have to do is step on your pedal, speed up a tad and pass me in less then 10 sec and then go back to your preferred driving speed. It’s that easy. So Lucy now has a full belly thanks to getting some diesel at Fort Garland and then being filled up completely at a TA Truck Stop on I25. We will be trying to keep her at a good cruising speed but you won’t ever see us racing her. So I sm fine getting passed… a lot…. I know my playtime comes when Rosalina gets unloaded.
