This was a very big day for me (and Lucy, I guess). When we arrived from Colorado City, CO in Raton, NM Ron told me it was my turn to drive Lucy. I admit I was very nervous but knew if I wanted the shot I had to take it now as the road from Raton to Amarillo is a very easy stretch of road, one we conversed on many many times in the last 25 years. The one handicap I faced was the fact it was super windy which made me trip that wheel a little tighter then I should have π
Here is what I can assess. I love driving her, she has this subdued power which is so different to my Rosalina. With Rosalina I want to go fast and I do not like speed limits, HOWEVER enter sweet Lucy in this equation and this car loving girl did a 180 today and I am still in a tad if a shock of the transformation that happened to my heart.
I started out keeping her a sweet comfortable speed and I am learning to listen to her sound and her likes and dislikes. I realized that I was in a curious way passed by many and that my idea of following Semi Trucks on the road felt by the wayside as they were flying down the road. Now enter a construction zone I found myself in between Dalhart and Amarillo. The sign said to slow the speed down to 60, from 75. My mind took a double take as I looked at my speed and realized I would actually have to speed up to make the speed to 60 π. Most of the way my sweet spot was 60 in cruise control and it felt like Lucy was teaching me today to slow down and smell the flowers and I honestly loved it. It felt right and relaxing. Now, however, not all went smoothly in our first meet and greet as her driver. I do not, absolutely do not like backing her up. Caption Ron transferred himself back in the flight instructor he used to be, and his Check Airman being kicked in in trying over and over in letting me back her up and all I can say is I failed miserably. Lucy went one way, and Lou, the trailer, went another way. The next thing that made me nervous but I conquered my fear a bit in that I e us taking her on sharp turns. 62 feet in length (18.89 meters) is quiet intimidating to rotate without hitting curbs or taking someone out. I am good so far but the hight of attention needed is by far superior to driving cars.
Well we made it to Amarillo, I maneuvered on I40 and we are at an Passport America Campground for the night. There are high winds and we are shaken around a bit but we are hooked up and finally the slides are out so we can move.
Congratulations on your first time in the driver's seat! You will be a pro in no time. Backing up with a trailer is definitely a skill that takes practice. You'll get it. You have to exit the frustration and relax and it will come. Enjoy your day. Safe travels my friend!❤️❤️
